23 Crochet Owl Beanie Pattern

My friend just had a baby boy so I whipped this beanie up. I plan on making 4 more tonight seeing as how everyone I know is having a baby!

Materials
Hook: I (5.50mm)
Yarn: Lion Brand Vanna's Choice
Yarn needle

Newborn Owl Beanie Pattern

Start by making a magic ring with 6 stitches.
Row 1: sc 2 in each st around (12).
Row 2: sc in first st, sc 2 in next st, repeat around (18).
Row 3: sc in next 2 sts, sc 2 in next st, repeat around (24).
Row 4: sc in next 3 sts, sc 2 in next st, repeat around (30).
Row 5: sc in next 4 sts, sc 2 in next st, repeat around (36).
Row 6: sc in next 5 sts, sc 2 in next st, repeat around (42).
Row 7-end: sc around until the beanie is about 5.5-6 inches in height.

Note: It is really easy to make this pattern bigger, just continue the pattern of increase after row 6 until the beanie is the right circumference size, then just sc around until it is the right height size.

Ear Flaps:
Row 1: sc 8 sts on one side of beanie
Row 2: ch. 1, turn sc in each st across (8).
Row 3: sc2tog, sc in next 4 sts, sc2tog (6).
Row 4: sc in each st across (6).
Row 5: sc2tog, sc in next 4 sts, sc2tog (4).
Row 6: sc in each st across (4).
Row 7: sc2tog, sc2tog (2.)
Row 8: sc in each st across (2).
Row 9: sc2tog (1).
Row 10: sc in st (1).

Note: Make the other ear flap on the other side of the beanie.

White stitching around: sc evenly around the beanie with white.

Eyes:
(with the black yarn)
Row 1: sc 5 with magic ring (5).
(with the green yarn)
Row 2: sc 2 in each st around (10).
Row 3: sc in next st, sc 2 in next st, repeat around (15).
(with the white yarn)
Row 4: sc in next 2 sts, sc 2 in next st, repeat around (20).
Row 5: sc in next 3 sts, sc 2 in next st, repeat around (25).
Fasten off and leave long tail for weaving it on.

Nose:
chain 5
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch. from hook and in each st across (4). Ch. 1 and turn.
Row 2: sc in each st across (4).
Row 3: sc2tog, sc2tog (2). Ch. 1 and turn.
Row 4: sc2tog (1). Ch. 1 and turn.
Row 5: sc in st (1).
Fasten off and leave long tail for weaving it on.

Ears:
Cut twelve 6-inch strips of white, brown, and green yarn. Tie a knot in the middle and pull one side of the loose yarn through the beanie. Weave it in/tie knot on the inside so it stays. Cut the top part evenly.

  4. I found the link to your blog on UCreate, where they featured this hat. How cute! I would love to be able to progress enough in crocheting to master something like this for one of my nieces or nephews. :)

  6. thank you so much for sharing this - my friend had a baby boy today, and tonight I've started this, though using thinner yarn than yours - very cute!

  7. What am I doing wrong... I'm lost! My hat seems to be SO tiny! Even at the 5th row, it seems the width is only about 3"(6" total circ.) I am a beginner, but this pattern seems so easy and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong! :-(

    1. The hat circumference should be around 13-14 inches. If you are using a different yarn or crochet hook that could be the problem. Or if you are crocheting really, really tight. (Which beginners tend to do). Let me know if any of those aren't the problem and I'll try to help you more! Good luck!

  8. I'm used to using extra bulky yarn and crocheting pretty loose for cocoons (https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/424404_10150626324813233_504183232_9311230_511847787_n.jpg)
(ok so not TOTAL beginner, I've also made this hat(and blanket) and others like it (https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/s720x720/430073_10150624135548233_504183232_9302153_803056315_n.jpg)
Doesn't seem like I'm going too tight? I actually thought I was going too loose at the beginning.
I'm using the same brand yarn- just different color. I'm using a 5.5 hook, too. Hmm...
Well I'm off to try it again~ or rip my hair out from not being able to figure it out...! Lol. This seems SO simple, and it's probably something stupid that I'm doing wrong to not figure it out, too.

    1. Hmm, ya I don't really know what you could be doing differently? It is a newborn size beanie, so it is super small. If you want to make it bigger you can add width by continuing the pattern after row 6. (so it would be sc in next 6 sts, sc 2 in next st, repeat around)And then just sc around until the beanie is the right length. Hope that helps!

    2. I ended up having to do 9 rows with sc 2 :-\ The top isn't the same as yours either. I ended up changing the ending and making just a blue hat which I'm adding eyes and a beak to to make it a bluebird. I just hope it's not too long :-\

  11. Alright, so to give an update, I used a 9mm with Lionbrand Hometown USA super bulky 6 yarn and followed these directions. It ended up being more for ages 1-3(I'm horrible with guessing sizes!) but uber adorable! Next I'll be using regular yarn lol
    Thank you SO much!! :-D

  14. I love this hat and I started making it for my sister who is having her baby shower this Sat. and I am having the same problem as Dawn. My hat is so tiny - about 3in (6 in. cir) I have crocheted a ton so this is a little confusing to me. I am using the same yarn and hook size. I will try it again tomorrow and see what happens. Thanks for the cute pattern!

    1. mmm, I didn't think I crocheted that loose. It is for a newborn so the pattern is pretty small. You can always make it bigger by continuing the pattern after row 5. Let me know if you need any other help.

  17. This is adorable! My daughter is having twins, a boy and a girl, and she has decided to do an owl theme for both. This would be perfect and I plan to make her two of them before the children arrive in November. Thank you for sharing!
